#Research at @ursinuscollege! Annabella Orsini ’23 was among the 62 students who presented during the annual Summer Fellows Symposium. 👏 Over the last eight weeks, Annabella has been creating chalcogenide glass films in the lab, using sulfide and selenide compounds. 🥼 (Chalcogenide glasses have a wide variety of applications that can affect everyday life and expand our observation capabilities in science; they can be used for search and rescue operations, medical imaging, and even telescopes 🔭 because they transmit across the infrared electromagnetic spectrum.)

The “why” behind the project? “Sulfide and selenide compounds are more flexible as well as cost effective than what is currently used. The goal is to extend the transmission capabilities made from these compounds so that they are comparable or better than what is in use today.” 💯

Emory & Henry College will begin offering a new bachelor of arts degree in Equine Assisted Therapy, starting in Fall 2021.This interdisciplinary program blends the college’s expertise in equine studies and psychology to create an opportunity for students who are interested in utilizing their knowledge and love of horses in order to offer therapeutic services to children and adults,” says Jessica Denniston, Clinical Assistant Professor of Equine Studies. The program will be based on the Equine Assisted Growth and Learning Association (EAGALA) model of practice. Congratulations to Gwen Stearns ’21 and Pascal O'Neill ’23, who represented the #BardDebateUnion in the 2021 World Universities Debating Championship earlier this month. The annual event draws nearly 400 students from over 50 countries. Gwen and Pascal debated teams from across the globe, and after nine grueling preliminary rounds, made Bard history by becoming the first Bard team to advance to elimination rounds! From @hampshirecollege Did you know? The @rwkerncenter on campus is the 17th certified Living Building in the world, an embodiment of Hampshire’s values in practice. It meets the stringent requirements of the world’s most advanced green building standard, the Living Building Challenge: it generates its own electricity, collects and treats its own water, and is built with local, non-toxic, and low-carbon materials. The 17,000-sq-ft building is a major piece of Hampshire’s broad sustainability initiatives to make campus operations carbon neutral. C’yona “CeCe” Edwards, @HiramCollege, ’23, is finishing up an internship with the Brookview Animal Hospital in Parma, Ohio. The Biology undergrad is pursuing a concentration in veterinary medicine and connected with the team at Brookview at the suggestion of Bethani Burkhart, director of career and academic development at Hiram. ⠀

“It’s a lot of hands-on experience, which I love,” says Edwards. She, along with a team of other veterinary assistants, helps with exams, surgeries and administrative duties. The aspiring veterinarian also learned how to handle animals who aren't as excited to be at the vet's office! That #LiberalArts education and it's focus on critical thinking and creative problem solving is paying off!
