Located in Meadville, Pennsylvania, for over 200 years Allegheny College has been the premiere college for students to explore all of their talents, all of their passions, through our unique major and minor requirement.

Over and over again, we hear from leaders in business, government, medicine, and education that the future belongs to innovators, inventors, and “big picture” thinkers — those who think both analytically and creatively. It is this preparation for the global marketplace — and for life — that ranks Allegheny above the rest and attracts national attention.

Founded in 1815, Allegheny is the 32nd oldest college in the country and will celebrate its bicentennial in 2015.

Meadville is located approximately 30 minutes from I-90 and I-80, two miles off of I-79, and just two hours from Pittsburgh, Cleveland and Buffalo. Downtown is within walking distance of Allegheny’s historic, 562-acre campus, which includes a 283-acre nature reserve and 203-acre recreational complex.

Allegheny recognizes its responsibility to pursue campus-wide environmental sustainability. Collaborative efforts between students, faculty, staff, civic leaders, and local residents have developed a comprehensive composting program, green roof, LEED certified buildings, geo-exchange heating and cooling, porous parking lots, wind generated electricity, an annual campus wide energy challenge, and a Climate Action Plan to achieve climate neutrality by the year 2020.

With the freedom to select from over 900 combinations of majors and minors, students expand their concentrations beyond one division of the liberal arts and sciences, developing the skills essential in today’s global marketplace: being articulate, innovative, analytical, collaborative, and creative.

During the first two years, every Allegheny student participates in seminars that focus on written and oral communication as well as academic and career advising. This progressive course sequence helps students create a four-year program to match their goals and needs, and the faculty instructor serves as advisor for both years.

All Allegheny students complete a Senior Project in their major field; a significant piece of original research that demonstrates the skills most prized by employers and graduate schools.

Led by faculty members from different major programs, Allegheny Experiential Learning Seminars offer for credit off-campus, intensive learning tours to students at the end of each spring semester. Recent study tour groups explored Belize, Cambodia, Canada, Columbia, France, Laos, Moldova, Norway, Spain, Ukraine, and Vietnam.

Beloit graduates are what the world needs now: people who are entrepreneurial, intellectually and professionally agile, and adept at seizing opportunities. Effective communicators, productive collaborators, creative problem-solvers. People who know how to build a future that works for everyone.

Our mission statement makes clear who we are and what we are committed to: “Beloit College engages the intelligence, imagination, and curiosity of its students, empowering them to lead fulfilling lives marked by high achievement, personal responsibility, and public contribution in a diverse society.” An emphasis on international and interdisciplinary perspectives, the integration of knowledge with experience, and close collaboration among peers, professors, and staff equips our students to approach the complex problems of the world ethically and thoughtfully. We stand for the power of connection, compassion, and community, and we are innovative in our response to emerging needs. Recognizing the shifts in the world around us — and quickly adapting — drives and distinguishes Beloit.

Beloit is an independent, four-year, residential liberal arts and sciences college located in south-central Wisconsin, 96 miles northwest of Chicago and an hour’s drive from Madison and Milwaukee. The City of Beloit is a diverse community, built in part by families who arrived as part of the Great Migration. The city is also now home to an international film festival, a renovated iron mill housing a tech hub and business incubator, and over 200 businesses and organizations that welcome our students as interns, researchers, and volunteers.

Recent Accolades
We take pride in rankings that recognize what truly matters: undergraduate teaching, first-year experience, innovation, high value, and what U.S. News terms social mobility. We’re also recognized for welcoming international students, a part of our commitment to sustaining a diverse and inclusive campus community.

In 2020-21, the college received national attention and acclaim for its Beloit Action Plan, an innovative, student-centered, forward-looking response to the COVID-19 pandemic. The proactive plan launched the Advanced Mentoring Program, Career Channels, and several financial support programs, all of which continue to shape a Beloit education today.

Top Innovator
For the second consecutive year, Beloit has been named among the top 10 most innovative liberal arts schools by U.S. News & World Report Best Colleges list. The ranking highlights institutions taking bold steps to change their curriculum, campus life, facilities, and technology. Based strictly on peer review and nomination, the ranking identifies colleges the public should “watch” because of their inventive approaches to education.

Value and Affordability
Beloit College is committed to making our high-value education affordable for all students. We routinely rank among top schools for “Best Value” for our merit and need-based financial aid. Our Net Price Calculator can estimate the aid available based on your family’s financial circumstances.

Study Abroad
About 35% of Beloit students spend a semester studying abroad — in China, Ecuador, England, Germany, Hong Kong, Hungary, Italy, Japan, Morocco, the Netherlands, Norway, Russia, and Senegal, among other countries. Visit www.beloit.edu/oie/offcampus/explore/ for more information on international education.

Advanced Mentoring Program
Within 72 hours of making a deposit, our Advanced Mentoring Program — AMP — pairs you with a faculty advisor who welcomes you into the community, shares helpful resources, and walks you through the process of registering for classes, for starters. Throughout the first two years at Beloit, AMP offers cross-disciplinary classes addressing issues of interest, personalized guidance, and an advisory group that serves as a home base within the larger college community.

Career Works
Beloit College believes that students’ future well-being depends on career readiness. Career Works coaches guide students to internships, research opportunities, community service, and networks that blend their academic work with career goals and offer opportunities to test, integrate, and evaluate knowledge and skills learned in the classroom. As they graduate from Beloit, students tap into the Power Grid, our network of alumni ready to engage with them as they move from transcript to resume and a meaningful working life.

Career Channels
Inspired by our longstanding commitment to pragmatic and purposeful education, Career Channels engage students in exploration of 21st century career opportunities, from health and healing to business and entrepreneurship. Participants gain access to peers, mentors, and resources that deepen their interests, expand their networks, and focus their career plans. The result: a relevant, real-world college experience — and graduates who are confident, focused, and employable.

Entrepreneurship
The Center for Entrepreneurship in Liberal Education (CELEB) is a one-of-a-kind program you won’t find at any other undergraduate school. Housed two blocks from campus in the heart of the city’s revitalized downtown district, its 18,000+ square feet are dedicated to music, art, digital media, prototyping, and traditional start-ups. The center is open to all students whether you already have an idea or are merely intrigued by the possibilities of self-employment. You’ll get resources, mentorship, and hands-on experience in accounting, marketing, development, and management—skills that entrepreneurs need and employers want. The experience will differentiate you from your peers.

The Powerhouse
Beloit has long been a powerhouse, and now it has a powerhouse: a converted power plant along the nearby Rock River transformed by MacArthur Prize-winning architect Jeanne Gang and her Studio Gang firm. The building opened in winter 2020 as a state-of-the-art, sustainable student union, recreation center, and athletics facility for Beloit students, faculty, and staff.

Marjorie and James Sanger Center for the Sciences
This Platinum-level LEED-certified, environmentally sustainable building houses seven departments. The innovative design of classroom and laboratory spaces encourages interdisciplinary learning, critical for today’s science students to take a leadership role in 21st century science.

Hendricks Center for the Arts
Located in downtown Beloit, just two blocks from campus, the Hendricks Center for the Arts is the centralized home of the college’s dance and music programs. A creatively adapted 48,000-square-foot historic building (once a post office, then the public library), the space includes an orchestral room, many practice rooms, four studio classrooms, a state-of-the-art film classroom, and design and staging labs.

Wright Museum of Art and Logan Museum of Anthropology
Unusual for a college of our size, we are home to two teaching museums: the Wright Museum of Art and the Logan Museum of Anthropology. The Wright Museum of Art provides the college and local community with diverse opportunities to appreciate, interact with, and understand the visual arts through exhibitions, collections, and programming. The Logan Museum of Anthropology engages the Beloit College community in learning about the world’s cultures, anthropology, and museology. Through its collections and programs, the museum fosters the integration of knowledge and experience to enrich learning.
