A Statement on Hampshire College, February 2019

The Colleges That Change Lives Board of Directors has been carefully monitoring the conversation at Hampshire College. Now that they have announced their plans for 2019-20, CTCL offers support as President Mim Nelson and the Hampshire College Trustees search for the right partner to help Hampshire move forward in its next 50+ years.

At this time, Hampshire remains a member of CTCL. Hampshire plans to enroll a minimal class for fall 2019—Early Decision applicants and students who had committed to attend Hampshire after completing a gap year in 2018-19. Hampshire does not plan to enroll new students in spring 2020. Therefore, they will neither be participating in the 2019 CTCL programs nor accepting student inquiries during restructuring.

President Mim Nelson is exploring partnerships with other institutions and hopes to make an announcement in this regard in June 2019. Following this, the CTCL Board will evaluate Hampshire’s status as a member of CTCL. Hampshire College was a founding member of Colleges That Change Lives, and we hope to continue our long relationship.

These are challenging times in higher education, especially for small, liberal arts colleges. The CTCL Board and leaders of our 45-member institutions firmly believe in the value of the transformative education offered at CTCL-member schools—one that develops graduates who will take us into the future with thoughtful, careful leadership.

Please contact us if you have more questions. The Board offers our support to the entire Hampshire community during this very difficult time, personally and professionally.
