Evergreen is a public liberal arts and sciences college in Olympia, Washington. Created in 1967, Evergreen is founded on an innovative learning model that includes team teaching, cross-discipline studies, and hands-on experiences.

Instead of choosing majors and minors, Evergreen students make their own path based on their interests and career goals. By taking courses taught by multiple faculty over multiple quarters, students have access to the time and resources they need to produce valuable, lasting work.

Faculty at Evergreen assess a student’s learning and academic progress in narrative evaluations rather than grades. This way, students get a real sense of the progress they’ve made over their academic career. They are encouraged to pursue what’s important to them and to think critically about the work they do.

Halfway between Seattle and Portland, Olympia is a gateway to big cities, national forests, mountain ranges, and the Pacific Ocean—destinations that many programs take advantage of.

The Evergreen campus is nestled in a vibrant Pacific Northwest forest with its own beach on Puget Sound.

But at our foundation is also a belief in the value of community and power of relationships. Our graduates are scholars, but also explorers, advocates and scientists. They climb mountains, travel to far-off corners and give voice to others. They care about community and aim to become citizens of the world.

Residence Halls
All students live in on-campus housing their first two years. We have dedicated halls for first year students, where they get comfortable, make friends, have fun and are supported. Beginning their second year, there are multiple options for single and shared rooms in multiple halls as well as in our Interest House community. In 2025, we opened the Nancy Serrurier Village, which includes three apartment-style residential buildings for juniors and seniors.

Student Activities
At Whitman, we encourage students to take advantage of over 100 clubs, organizations and intramural sports. Launch a radio show, join friends in the fight to stop climate change or run for student office. Every student receives $150 a year to spend on adventures with the Outdoor Program, so take on a new challenge or join others in a favorite outdoor activity.

Diversity, Equity, Inclusion & Belonging
With multicultural and International students making up 43.5% of the student body, Whitman College is committed to fostering an environment where there is diversity across a range of social, cultural, and political identities. Programming run through the Glover Alston Intercultural Center, the Third Space Center, the Office of Religious & Spiritual Life and the Queer Resource Center offer academic and social support for all students.
