Emory & Henry is a transformative academic community. Our education is distinguished by progress – sometimes sudden, sometimes gradual – toward an expanded sense of personal potential and an enlightened sense of civic responsibility. This transformation, this increase in excellence, is the foundation of our campus culture. Its impact is lasting and profound.

Founded in 1836, Emory & Henry is the oldest institution of higher education in Southwest Virginia. It is named for Bishop John Emory, an eminent Methodist church leader when the college was founded, and Patrick Henry, a renowned patriot of the American Revolution and Virginia’s first governor. The two men represent what we believe are the foundations for successful lives: active faith and civic virtue.

Affiliated with the United Methodist Church, Emory & Henry is a four-year liberal arts university.

This tree-filled campus encompasses 331 pristine acres of rolling hills in and around the academic village of Emory, Virginia. Located in the Virginia Highlands, the campus is within easy driving distance of the historic town of Abingdon and the Tri-Cities region of Bristol, Johnson City, and Kingsport.

Emory & Henry University continues to be listed as a top National Liberals Arts College in the United States by U.S. News & World Report, Best Colleges. Emory & Henry has also recently ranked among Washington Monthly’s Top Liberal Arts Colleges based on contribution to the public good in three broad categories: social mobility, research, and promoting public service; and 2021 Best Bang for the Buck Colleges, an exclusive list of schools ranked according to how well they help non-wealthy students attain marketable degrees at affordable prices.

As an institution whose primary goals are based on student success and satisfaction, Emory & Henry has also been recognized as one of the renowned Colleges of Distinction. Emory & Henry is one of only 42 schools that are championed as part of Colleges That Change Lives, a non-profit organization dedicated to the advancement and support of a student-centered college search process.

In its first-ever college rankings, Newsweek magazine has ranked Emory & Henry fourth among all colleges and universities in the nation in providing service learning and community service. Emory & Henry was one of 125 institutions – out of more than 3,500 nationwide – included in the ranking by Newsweek, which rated colleges and universities in 12 categories.

In 2009, Emory & Henry was one of six colleges and universities nationwide to receive the President’s Award, the highest national recognition for commitment to service learning and civic engagement. The award recognizes the University’s unique approach to community/college partnerships, which have become a national model for civic engagement. Emory & Henry also was named a finalist for the 2010 President’s Award.

Emory & Henry supports a strong research program in the arts and sciences. Students also benefit from a wide range of practical experiences beyond the classroom. In 2011 Dr. Jim Duchamp, an E&H chemistry professor, was named Virginia Professor of the Year by The Carnegie Foundation and the Council for the Advancement and Support of Education, and in 2010 Dr. Teresa Keller received the Virginia Outstanding Faculty Award given by the Council for Higher Education in Virginia.

Emory & Henry professors have won 16 state and national teaching awards in the past 26 years. When adjusted for the size of the institution, that record is unmatched by any other college or university in Virginia.

In 2010, The IveyFiles.com, which focuses on higher education issues, listed Emory & Henry University as one of the top five colleges in the nation where no audition is required for aspiring actors. In addition, Mademen.com, a website devoted to men and men’s issues, ranks Emory & Henry second among the top 10 acting schools in Virginia.

Across the curriculum, E&H professors prepare students by encouraging research and providing them with research opportunities that most college students do not receive until graduate school.
